lyrics

sipping coffee with Mr. Antebellum
and his toughest boys
he made me feel so scared
so scared to be me

I knew I'd been here before
I've felt the breeze through the door
sharp faces walk by and keep staring
I turn back, uncaring

he took a drink and said "boy
who are you fooling?
I've heard every thought in your head"
he said "boy who are you fooling
your mother's workin , and your father died trying
tell me what are you here for?"

I said

they keep telling me
what I want to be
is nothing but a fools
dying dream
but if I'm to be
what I'm made to be
use those words to pull me up
the dogwood tree

staring down Mr antebellum
and the loudest noise
he was getting impatient
with my newfound peace

he acted nonchalant
in the middle of this small town restauraunt
but I could tell his grip was slipping
all I had to do was keep digging.

he took a drink and said "boy
who are you fooling?
I think you're better off dead"
he said "boy who are you fooling
you think you're pretty hard, and it's cute how hard you're trying
tell me what are you here for?"

I said

they keep telling me
what I want to be
is nothing but a fools
dying dream
but if I'm to be
what I'm made to be
use those words to pull me up
the dogwood tree

play it for me.

there was no more mr. antebellum.
he was never real
I didn't think too hard about
how that made me feel

he was always conniving
yet somehow, impurely charming
he'd only leave for a while
just to wait till I'm surviving

let this be a lesson for you
if you ever think to meet this man
he'll break you down and make you blame yourself
it's all laid out in his plan

dont say that I never warned you
if you ever think to meet this man
you'll be dependent and you'll lose yourself
when you hit rock bottom
